Mission

A student-led, student-financed initiative investing in U.S. public markets under a disciplined value approach, with a focus on infrastructure: digital, energy, and technology. Investment returns fund a continuous program of zero-interest microloans for Ethiopian entrepreneurs across the Houston metro.

What We Do

Abyssinian Investments

Abyssinian Investments was founded on a simple idea: communities thrive when they have access to fair, flexible capital, and the absence of that access is one of the largest, quietest barriers to Ethiopian-owned business growth.

Houston is home to one of the largest, fastest-growing populations of Ethiopian entrepreneurs in the United States. Many of these business owners — salons, restaurants, transportation operators, retail shops, caterers — cannot access traditional bank financing for the small-dollar, short-duration working capital they actually need.

Abyssinian Investments was built to be a different kind of source. We invest our principal under disciplined value-investing principles in public markets. The returns from that investment activity fund a continuous initiative of zero-interest microloans to Ethiopian-owned small businesses in the Houston region, compounding for the community.

Rooted in Equb

An old tradition without the old limits.

The model is rooted in equb, the rotating savings tradition Ethiopian communities have practiced for centuries when formal banks were absent or unreliable. But equb has limits: you wait months for your turn, the amount is fixed by the group, and you only receive if you have already contributed. Abyssinian Investments takes that same trust-based principle and removes those limits.

Investment Philosophy

We follow the fundamentals.

Our active book concentrates on infrastructure: digital, energy, and technology. We buy durable businesses at prices consensus is mispricing, with downside built into the entry.

Loan Policy

Eligibility

Applicants must be Ethiopian-owned businesses operating in or launching within the Houston metropolitan area, currently in a pre-revenue, early-revenue, or declining-revenue phase. Borrowers must be referred through a trusted community channel.

Loan Terms

Loans range from $500 to $3,000 in principal. All loans carry zero interest. Standard terms are six, nine, twelve, or eighteen months, repaid in equal monthly installments via Zelle, ACH, or check. There are no application fees, origination fees, or prepayment penalties.

Default Policy

We treat lending as a relationship, not a transaction. If a borrower faces hardship, repayment plans can be adjusted through extensions, reduced payments, or temporary deferrals. We never sell debt, use collection agencies, or pursue legal action.

Application

Prospective borrowers can request consideration by contacting our Managing Partner, Robell Ephrem (rge2113@columbia.edu), with a brief description of the business and the name of a community referrer. Decisions are typically returned within fourteen days.
